History & Architecture

The city’s unusual name originated from the colorful Spanish phrase, Boca de Ratones. Originally populated by Calusa Indians, the area attracted settlers from the Carolinas and Georgia who influenced its magnificent architecture.

After visiting Boca Raton in the 1920’s, renowned Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner bought thousands of acres, intending to develop the area as another Venice, Italy. By 1926, Mizner had completed the Cloisters Inn, a pink towered landmark resort now known as The Boca Raton, which presides over a sublime two-mile stretch of Atlantic beachfront.

Mizner’s work inspired a unique style of architecture, which is pervasive throughout the city. His modish style, somewhere between elegant Georgian and Venetian architecture, was replicated for decades, giving the city of Boca Raton its unified aesthetic. The predominant colors of Boca Raton architecture are light pastels with high concentrations of pink tints, Mizner’s preferred color.
