The colorful Spanish phrase, Boca de Ratones, gave rise to the city’s name. First populated by Calusa Indians, the area also attracted settlers who traveled to Boca Raton from the Carolinas and Georgia helping to create magnificent architecture. In the 1920’s, notable Palm Beach architect, Addison Mizner, bought thousands of acres after visiting Boca Raton, intending to develop the area into a new Venice, Italy. In 1926, Mizner completed the Cloister Inn, a city landmark now known as the Boca Raton Resort & Club.

Throughout the course of the later century in Boca Raton, Mizner’s style created a unique style of architecture ubiquitous throughout the city. His Modish-style between elegant Georgian and Venetian architecture was replicated in construction throughout the decades, giving the city of Boca Raton a unified aesthetic. The predominant colors used in Boca Raton’s architecture are light pastels with high concentrations of pink tints—as it was Mizner’s preferred color.
